The second season of the ''Sword Art Online'' anime series, titled ''Sword Art Online II'', adapts volumes 5-7 of the light novel series written by Reki Kawahara, as well as parts of volume 8. It follows almost one year after Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya putting an end to the SAO incident in 2024 and rescuing Asuna Yuuki in Alfheim Online (ALO). The story follows Kirito's investigation about a series of murders happening in a virtual reality game called "Gun Gale Online" (GGO), while meeting several new allies as well his greatest enemy—a player known only as "Death Gun" with the ability to kill a person in the real world by killing their virtual avatar.
The anime is produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Itō. The series also features character designs by Shingo Adachi, based on the original designs by abec, art designs by Yoshinori Shiozawa as well as music composed by Yuki Kajiura.〔 Yoshitsugu Matsuoka and Haruka Tomatsu reprise their roles as Kirito and Asuna from the previous season. The 24-episode series premiered in Japan on July 5, 2014 on Tokyo MX with later airings on Chiba TV, tvk, Teleball, GYT, GTV, MBS, TVA, TVh, TVQ and BS11. The series was made available as a worldwide simulcast by Aniplex. It was also picked up by Crunchyroll for online simulcast streaming in North America and other select parts of the world. Daisuki will also stream the series in select European countries.
The first opening theme is "Ignite" by Eir Aoi.〔 The first ending theme is "Startear" by Luna Haruna. Starting from episode 15, the second opening theme is "Courage", which is performed by Asuna Yuuki's voice actress, Haruka Tomatsu, while the second ending theme is "No More Time Machine", which is sung by LiSA, and the third ending theme is "Shirushi", also sung by LiSA.
